Education

Currently, I am a Dance Education Major and a Health/Kinesiology Minor at Wayne State University in Detroit with a graduation date of May 2011. From January, 2004 to May, 2006, I attended Wayne County Community College where I earned an Associates of Arts Degree. During that time, I was selected to study abroad in Buenos Aires, Argentina in South America where I studied various forms of Latin dance. November 2007, I was selected out of 30 students to speak with Dr. Cornell West of Princeton University on my experience in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Experience

I am currently going to school to teach dance and health to students grades k-12. In August 2008, I registered for Honors 4990 – Directed Study called Detroit Fellows Tutoring, which required me to be a tutor for young people. I tutored 1st grade students, ages 6-7, from September 2 through December 18, 2008. This was another great experience that I had working with children because I was able to help them with something that is such a necessity in life. Detroit Fellows Tutoring Project was not only a class that I received credit for, it was a challenge that I was willing to accept. My responsibilities were to take attendance daily, read a short first grade level book to them, and create a fun environment for them by creating letter games for them, teaching them how to read and use letters correctly. I was an instructor for Oasis Charity Foundation, an organization that serves Detroit Public Schools sending instructors to teach children their talent for after school programs. I worked with this organization from September 2004 until June 2008. I received most of my teaching experience from this particular job and it was the best experience that I have ever had. I worked 7.5 hours every week, choreographing and maintaining a fun and educational class for 3rd through 8th grade students. I set a curriculum for my students at the beginning of the semester for my students and followed it. My duties included taking attendance daily, warm-ups and stretches, teaching the fundamentals of hip hop dance, and preparing them for their final showing at the end of the school year. I learned so much from this particular experience such as teaching etiquette and communication with children, parents, and fellow faculty members. Not only was I a dance teacher, I also had to be a mentor to some of the children out of necessity. From 2001 until my freshman year of college in 2002, I was the Youth Leader at Central Institutional Missionary Baptist Church working with children ages 5-18. I was the mediator between the Youth Director and the children. My responsibilities were to attend meetings, take notes, assist the youth director, plan trips and always be available for the youth. I was a Teacher assistant for Detroit Dance Center under the guidance of Carol Morisseau from 2000-2002. My duties were to teach beginner ballet and tap classes to students ages 3-5. My responsibilities were to take attendance, help them stretch, teach the basic fundamentals of ballet and tap, and prepare them for their end of the year recital.
